Fishing Report w/e 21st June

We have our All Night Fishing Event tomorrow (late Friday into Saturday) – so for any last minuters who think they can stay awake and fancy a dabble, you’ll need to book your place tomorrow. Full details in ‘Noticeboard’ below It is forecast to be 16-17 degrees with a light 6-7mph SW wind. Better than last year!

Angler of the week was Alastair Douglas who landed 13 during one visit and 7 on another. Including two VERY LARGE Brown Trout from Ross Lake. There have been many reports of big fish lunging at flies or smash ups on Ross, so these may have been the culprits. Very well done to Alastair for landing them successfully – on Daddies and Top Hats no less.

The fishing had been fairly decent prior to the hot weather hitting, but it has taken a nosedive since. With any luck, we’ll be back to cloudy and cooler days very soon, but in the meantime we’re thankful the lakes were dug so deep and the fish have cooler water to seek refuge in. It goes without saying that any hooked fish are to be kept in the water at all times and released as quickly as possible please.

We will be monitoring the water temperature – in case it reaches threshold level – where the dissolved oxygen in the water drops to unsafe levels to catch fish in. It is difficult to predict, but this weekend would be the days most at risk of a short term fishery closure. We will post updates on Facebook if this happens but assume we are open for now. Once the weekend passes, things should cool down.

For anyone fishing, try to avoid the heat of the day. Early and late will be your best times and small dries are expected to come into their own heading towards dark.

If you are here through the day, try to find the deeper water and get your fly down. Above all, the cold hard truth is you will catch less when the sun is beating down. The fish will usually form their own protection by simply not taking flies or finding the deepest coolest water out of reach of bank anglers. The night fishing might be quite interesting to see if they come out during darkness.

On Tuesday, we welcomed back the Chatton Cadence Codgers, who had some great fishing – finishing with a rod average of 5.5. Fish were interested throughout the day but starting to show signs of becoming awkward with the humidity. Dries were generally the best method on the day but all the guys said the fish were really finicky. Griffiths Gnats were good flies later in the day with the Beetles mentioned last week falling on the water.

Fishing Forecast

Improving from Sunday, when temperatures are forecast to drop to 20 degrees. And then 18-19 for the rest of next week, with more sensible night time temperatures. Winds will be mostly from the SW/W and light to medium strength. There may be lightening and heavy rain possible as well, so keep eyes and ears peeled.

First Cast – 8.30am.
Last Cast – 11.00pm every day. Except Saturday, which is always 5.00pm.
