Still fishing ok for July. Tom Jones top rod with 16.
At a time of year when trout fishing can hit the buffers, we are pleasantly surprised to report the fishing has been slightly better than expected. Make no mistake – this is not saying it is fishing its head off, but for July its better than it should be.
Tom Jones showed the way with a fantastic return of 16 fish using his favourite naturals to great effect. Pheasant Tail Nymph and Top Hats his best patterns. Well done indeed, Tom. Elsewhere, naturals that have dominated the returns – above, below and in the surface.
With water clarity likely to keep improving based on a fairly dry forecast, this trend should continue. Try Size 16 PTNs, Hares Ear or Damsels when nymphing – or small Top Hats and Beetles on the surface. If the weather is bright, include something with a little sparkle in the dressing. It doesn’t take much to give a glint and dries with little tails of krinkle flash or nymphs with some silver or gold might just make the difference. As usual for this time of year, the closer you fish to dark the better the fishing should be.
The forecast is actually half decent (see below) so come and give it a go.
