Fishing Report w/e 7th June

Big fish hooked and lost, muggy conditions making fishing inconsistent. Dries and nymphs best.

If we can get the humid overheads to disappear, we’d be flying but while they stick around the fish have turned fairly lethargic on some days and very erratic on others. There is still plenty being caught but it feels like tough sledding at times.

Mornings are probably best at the moment. The fish are looking up but the beetles of April and May aren’t around in the same numbers at the moment. Top Hats seem to be the dry fly of choice at the moment, particularly a Yellow Owl version. Damsels are increasing in numbers and there are a few Cranefly dotting about now to which the fish have responded.

While fish are at all depths, this is changing by the hour. Thunder, heavy rain, bright sun and winds changing direction regularly has unsettled things without doubt. It might be worth trying things much deeper if the usual buzzer/dry/nymph approach isn’t working in the upper layers. Maybe the sinking lines can be dusted off or set an indicator much deeper – or find a quiet corner and try the dries where the wind meets the calm? As soon as we return to a more consistent and settled weather pattern, things will pick up.

The weekly catches show the fishing has still been outstanding at times though. These were all in the past few days – so not bad for a slower week.
