February Fishing Report

Consistent high catches and buzzers back on the menu!

After weeks of having to fish slow and deep, things have started to turn around. Sunday saw much more activity as the temperature went up a notch and winds calmed down.

Top rod for the second week in a row was Ben Blake who had 20 for his day on Thursday. Great fishing once again.

On Tuesday, we had the Chatton Cadence Codgers with 21 anglers turning out a rod average of 6, with plenty of double figure hauls.

Fish of the week was a 10lb rainbow trout by John Pringle on a beaded buzzer – very close in on Dunnydeer. John had a great week, averaging well over 11 fish a day. Definitely worth speaking to if you see him on the bank.

Robbie Bell was another accumulator, landing just shy of 30 fish for his three visits – even managing a couple on nymphs closer to the surface. Another angler on a good week was Stewart Younger. He had over 30 fish for his 2 days. Bloodworms and various lures fished slowly the key. Glenn Appleby and Craig Crompton also had around 30 fish for their day. Great fishing as ever lads.

The notable addition to this week’s report are buzzers. A lot of fish have been caught on them. David Parker (19), Peter (14), D Watson (15) and John McL (14) all had a good proportion taking buzzers. Generally straight lined on a midge tip, but also deep down on the bung.

Arthur Moore, Robbie Bell and Dodd Smith had 14, 10 and 7 on bloodworms.

Natural flies subsurface aren’t just a token attempt now. Give them a try for sure.

Each lake had an extra 100 cracking Invicta fish stocked midweek although most caught since have been older fish. The new ones are hiding somewhere. As well as some lovely 4-8lb fish and the usual rank and file rainbows, some gorgeous small brown trout have also gone in as an experiment to add some variety and hopefully grow on. Please let us know if you catch any of these brownies as we only know of a handful at the moment.

The usual lures and indictor set ups have also done well. Derek Pozzi (14) on a Cat Bug out of Dunny and Chatton, Steve McMorn (18) over two sessions on lures and Steve Barker (11) on Zonkers and Eggs.

Ryan Wilkinson caught his first ever fish during a half day lesson with Stuart Ingledew Fly Fishing and finished on 10. Well done Ryan.

Black or olive snakes did well for David Jordan, Roy Pringle, David Wilson, Lindsay Harle and Craig Cowen. You’ll always do well at Chatton with a black snake or zonker.

Most fishing effort has been on Chatton Lake and Dunnydeer, but the higher rod average has been Ross Lake.

So there we have it. A fantastic week’s fishing. It has been hard keeping up. Every lake and every method are worth a try at the moment. Let us hope the weather behaves.
Watch out for news of a new tagged fish competition next week.

UPDATE An angler on Monday caught 10, after this report was written – 8 were over 3lb. So the new fish have settled in well then! Comments – ‘outstanding quality fish’

See you soon.
