Last week we lost those horrible easterly winds, but the replacement has been some pretty strong ones from the west. It has hardly been tropical, but temperature has gone up a little as a result. Whenever we have strong winds, Chatton Lake tends to get fished the most. This leaves Ross and Dunnydeer with less angling pressure. Worth noting if your day is a little calmer.
Top rod of the week was once again a tie. This time between Allan Goodwill and Steve McMorn. Both catching 14 each. Steve caught on pulled black lures. Allan used salmon roe eggstacy and black bunny leeches under the bung for his. (To clarify – not actual salmon eggs).
Overall, the fish are slightly more spread out now. You will still catch them deep, but more anglers are seeing success in midwater. Intermediate and Di-3 lines are just as likely to catch as Di-5 and deep fished indicators now. Don’t discount a midge tip if you are planning on retrieving ultra slow as well. Especially with buzzers. Fish where the wind is blowing for the best results, although it can be uncomfortable. Every day will be different so keep chopping and changing methods and locations.
Alec Harvey and Colin Spillard shared over 30 fish for their two visits, mostly on Cheese Minnows under the bung or black snakes. Slow and deep the general comments.
Gary Cunningham returned 12 fishing the indicator at 9ft. He caught from all three lakes and showed that changing places regularly was key. Fly was a Blue Cheese Slushy. Michael Suckling did very well on one of the tougher days this week catching 9 on Cheese Minnows and Buzzers. Really good going Michael. Eddie Day was rewarded for his efforts with a 7lb Rainbow Trout. Allan Cook had 10 on Cheese Minnow and Buzzers. Stewart Younger had 10 on snakes. A change from his usual delicate approach.
Plenty of others in the 4-6lb category have been coming out and it is not unreasonable to expect a run in with at least a couple of these in your session. They’re lovely fish, as are the small brownies that we stocked which have been showing up a little more in the past week as well.
David has been setting to work on the lakes now he’s full time, with some trimming of the gorse bushes, decorating in the lodge and a rejuvenation of the lake signage, the starting point. The dark background in the lodge looks top class and goes really well with the new counter and menus. Two full gorse bushes have been trimmed to extinction in one location if you can pick that out.
Forecast looks really good. With more settled winds, winter sunshine and reasonable temperatures. Nice conditions to be out in. It’ll be nice to lose the swirling winds of last week.
Hope to see you soon now there is a tiny bit of spring in the air.
Remember we are closed Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th March.
