Fishing Report w/e 23rd March

Best week of the year so far. Fishing is outstanding!

Conditions haven’t been ideal in theory, but the fish haven’t been too bothered. We’ve had some huge catches in the sunshine. It has been amazing. Just too many to list.

James and Joe Stevenson shared 38 fish on a cracking day. Damsels and Apps worms doing most of the damage. Well done lads.

Allan Goodwill had a mixed week on Eggstacy Worms. On Thursday he had 22 fish and then ‘only’ 3 on Sunday. Sure we’d all take a rod average of 12 though. Good stuff Allan.

Jimmy Drew tied with Allan for the week’s top rod after another great day, catching 22 on apps worms. Jimmy was top rod last week as well. Both Jimmy and Allan caught nearly all their fish from Dunnydeer.

Graeme Taylor also had another consistent week, this time on buzzers. 14 was his best session.

There have been so many catches of around 5-10, especially in the second half of the week.

The old reliable damsel nymph was this week’s top fly, alongside the Apps. There have been loads of medium sized catches on it. Try a weighted one on an intermediate line. Lures are still working although truth be told, any fly could do a job – the fish seem pretty peckish. Earlier in the week they were still deep as the last of the overnight frosts hit, but as days have passed, they’ve moved higher in the water once again.

Keith and Matt had a great lesson with Stuart Ingledew Fly Fishing– Keith catching the best fish we know of this week. A rainbow trout of around 8lb. It took a black snake hung at the end of the retrieve and fought really hard.

As ever, keep an eye on the forecast to help decide tactics but it is looking relatively settled so buzzer fishing might be your best bet if the wind doesn’t get too strong. Put a midge tip on to anchor them if it gets blowy. Maybe a size 12 with a little weight on the point and a size 14 or 16 on the dropper. You’ll never go far wrong with black or green. Just make sure they are fished ultra slow. Either side of midday seems the best time.

We are now entering what most would class as the very best three months of the trout fishing calendar. You never know when one type of insect will be on the go, but make sure you’ve got buzzers, small black hoppers and a few beetles in your box as a minimum.

If the hawthorns or black gnats fall and you don’t have some black dries, you will kick yourself. As luck would have it, we have a good selection to buy in the lodge!

See you soon.
