Latest Fishing Report

Slightly trickier fishing lately but fish-friendly weather on the way!

No doubt overhead conditions have made fishing tougher this past week but it didn’t stop Matty Devine having an incredible day. He landed 20 trout on nymphs and Devine Dancers, including 4 superb brownies. Nearly all from Ross Lake. Unusually, Matty also had 8 bonus Perch. Stunning fish if you’ve never caught one.

There has also been another tagged fish caught. Well done to Bob Black on his £120 win. The fish was stocked early February and took a dry fly on Chatton Lake. Lets you see how long they can avoid being caught.

In other news, we are opening up for All Night Fishing on the night of Friday, 4th July. Scroll down to ‘Noticeboard’ below for full details. A rare chance to fish Chatton in the dark! It is already booking up, so get in sharpish and charge the head torches.

Back to the fishing and Ronnie Glass had 11 on Buzzers and Hawthorns. Like Matty, most of his came from Ross Lake. Stephen Williams had 12 on Emergers and Blobs. Great fishing. Ben Blake had 15 for his two visits on the washing line with FABs and Buzzers

After many days of sunshine and blue skies, the weather looks set to change for the better over the weekend. Next week looks to be a settled SW/W wind pattern, which should bring a little more showery weather and more consistent fishing. With a decent breeze, dry fly may become less popular and subsurface fishing will likely dominate. It is still worth keeping an eye out for rising fish though, and Hawthorn Flies are just about in peak season now. Adapt to the conditions basically.

Suggested flies for your next visit are harder to predict, with most methods likely to catch at some point. If you want to fish buzzers, it may be best to avoid the anticipated surface tow by using Midge Tips or Hover lines instead of the usual floater.

Once the weather has settled, fish will most likely be at a more consistent depth, so try indicators around 3ft-6ft or lures on intermediate lines. Washing lines should also do well.

We’re now in full swing with holiday season and our visitors are loving how close we are to so many amazing castles, worldwide history, incredible scenery and great fly fishing here at Chatton. We’ve got our own caravan park with full views of the Cheviot Hills, and if you are staying elsewhere in Northumberland, we’d love it if you called in for a cup of tea and a bite to eat. You can hire fly rods for the day or we can easily arrange fly fishing lessons, where all equipment is provided and you will have someone on your shoulder giving pointers throughout. Ideal if you’ve never fly fished before (pre-booking required – see ‘Noticeboard’ below)

Fly Box: Damsel Nymphs, Top Hats, Black/Olive Buzzer, Daddy Longlegs, Beetles, Black Sedgehog, Egg Worms, Diawl Bachs, Snakes, Devine Dancer.

See you all soon.
