Fishing Report w/e 4th October

Continuing to improve. Loads of catches of 5 or more. More big brown trout. Happy days!

Another week of slightly cooler weather has taken the fishing up one more notch again as things gradually become more and more consistent.

Bruce Young may be claiming best session of the week, landing five fish – all over 4lbs – in four hours. The highlight being two huge brownies approaching double figures. No point messing around with the rank and file 2lb’ers eh?  Black Bunny Leech was the successful fly for those who like to know what the biggies are taking.

While dry flies are still a big part of the equation, this is maybe the first week in a long time lures have been so prominent in the returns. A sure sign the fish are a little more willing to chase in the cooler, more oxygen rich water. We’ve also had a noticeable increase in the brown trout activity with some cracking fish being caught to go alongside the already established rainbows in a similar 3lb to 8lb bracket.

Fish will still look upwards for a meal and the old favourite Daddy Longlegs is getting plenty of interest. Main tactics last week were lures on intermediate lines though. Standard figure of 8 about 3-5ft down might be the way to go and don’t forget to change flies if takes dry up.

Reddis Bait lake remains consistent with good bags coming broken up Garlic Eggs or the standard pastes. Fish are generally 2ft to 5ft down depending on sunshine. Don’t forget we sell Powerbait in the lodge if you’re running short. Some anglers did well popping this up off the bottom as well, so fish seem spread over all depths.

After a summer break, we welcomed back the Chatton Cadence Codgers on Tuesday.  18 anglers landed 60 fish for a rod average of 3.3.  Get togethers are monthly and generally on a Tuesday. It was great to get everyone back together again for these great social days with thanks to Stewart Younger for organising. Alan Edwards shone bright as the top Codger on the day. Well done Alan.

With ever increasing darkness and quite chilly night time temperatures forecast, the improvement to fishing will continue.  It is a rarely considered thing that darker nights give more cooling and less heating time for the water. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but small water trout anglers are generally happier being wrapped up in coats over t-shirts and shorts. It looks like we are right on the cusp of this happening.
