Fishing Report w/e 18th October

Numbers of medium to big fish still the highlight, but catches not quite back to cool weather standards yet. Ross Lake best.

It has been a more awkward week’s fishing than expected. Almost certainly hindered by bright sun and flat calms. This has meant higher footfall on the banks, which is great to see, but pleasant weather doesn’t always equate to great fishing weather. Most people have caught, however. A little heavy rain and wind might rough things up a little and put some colour in the water. And some of that may be on the way.

One pattern that has definitely maintained this week is how Ross Lake has fished best of the fly lakes – by quite some way. As we all know, that can change overnight, but the usually reliable Dunnydeer has certainly been slow.

Once again lures and pulling are marginally out-fishing the naturals and at times it seems the fish aren’t very deep at all – until the sun pops up. We have had the unusual occurrence of calm slicks forming on the windward bank on a couple of days and anglers fishing dries into these have done well. There have been a mixed bag of flies hatching but none in huge numbers. We’ve had some small sedges coming off in the middle of the day, a handful of rather large green midge and some stoneflies. But the numbers of any fly have just been too low to trigger proper rises.

Glenn Appleby was the top rod for the week, landing 14 fish during his session using lures. R Hume also reached double figures, catching on Daddies and Pheasant Tail Nymphs.  Top angling to both of you. We continue to see a high proportion of fish in the 4lb to 8lb bracket as well as some sightings of some huge brown trout.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast before you travel this week – Saturday looks the best weekend fishing day, unless standing in a wind tunnel is your thing.
