Another great week’s fishing. Top rod this week was Matty Devine with 19, including rainbows of 10lb and 8lb in a superb 6hr session. Matty used his usual variety of flies including lures and buzzers.
Gotzi Graves had a great time landing 16 using blobs. Derek Logan had 15, including two lovely brown trout. Cats whisker and F-flys were Derek’s best flies. Also doing well was Ben Blake (15) whose catch came off the top using beetles but also on an indicator fished very deep. David Parker had another superb session, catching 13 on dries and lures. Simon Sharp is a relative newcomer to fly fishing who is getting on the top rod list regularly now. This week he had 13 and like Davie, Matty, Derek and Ben used a mixture of dries and lures. All clear demonstrations that the fish are active at all levels – in all lakes.
Fly selection for the entire week across all returns has been the biggest mixed bag of the year so far. Anything in your box is in the game, so keep chopping and changing till you find the killing method. There is no set pattern. Buzzers have had more mentions than recent weeks, and blobs have also featured in many catches. Dry flies are still a major consideration, but timing is crucial. Respond very quickly when the fish start showing as the window of opportunity may be very small.
Steve McMorn (14) – over 2 visits on lures
Ian Santos (9) – Lures off all three lakes
Brian Scrowther (9) – Hares Ear
Z Coates (9) – Okey Dokey and Lures
Mike Blackwood (9) – Black Snake
Rob Frame (8) – Shipmans
Neil Jones (8) – Bunny Leech
Mr Nugent (Snr) had two cracking brownies each around 4lb – both on dries
…. and a whole host of catches in the 4 to 7 fish range – too many to mention. It has been another very good week.
The forecast for the coming week is a very good fishing one. Pretty settled conditions for the next seven days look likely and dry fly may still fish well. Winds are expected to be light with plenty of cloud cover and very little rain. Not just good for the feeding trout, but a lovely time to be in the outdoors. Maybe get out now before it changes!
