Fishing Report w/e 10th August

Fishing improved. Big brown trout showing.

For the second week in row, fishing has picked up and good catches have been made. It is still very patchy though, so don’t expect fish to be taking all day.

Max Anderson had a great day and claims top rod of the week with 13 fish. Max used Daddies and other dries with Dunnydeer being his best lake – and the finger in particular his best area. Darren Frame was another to hit double figures with 10 fish – all from Dunnydeer once again and also on dries.

A law unto themselves, we’ve also had plenty of reports of our big browns appearing this week. Largely absent recently, there have been numerous catches of brownies up to 9lb. Alastair D and S Jordan both catching their’s on the surface with dries. Doesn’t get much better than that!

At the time of writing we are in the middle of some very hot weather, so take this into account if you are fishing with us. With water to 18-20ft, it is a fair bet that a lot of fish will sit it out in the depths in the cooler water. Find any drop-offs close to the bank and fish deep while the weather is like this. Any little inflows can also draw fish and look for shaded areas too. Trout will hide under anything to avoid the sun.  Most importantly of all, keep handling to a minimum and release the fish as quickly as possible.

The forecast is a more comfortable 20 degrees once these hot couple of days are out the way. Winds look to be very light and from the east for several days in succession.

If there is any cloud cover there is every chance of some good hatches and dry fly fishing could be outstanding – but it may be in short windows. Be prepared though. What looks a tricky forecast can sometimes deliver unexpectedly good sessions if the sun gets covered for spells. Today we’ve had flying ants which the fish have been absolutely gorging on, but that is for next week’s report!

Closing time now 9pm (except Saturday, which is always 5pm).
