Fishing Report w/e 29th March

The Big One 2026 Chatton Heat 3 winners
The Big One Chatton Heat 3 winners

Fishing well, new closing time and Caravan Park back open.

It was always going to be hard to follow the fishing of last week, but it has been another pearler considering the weather trying to ruin things. Special mention must go to Darren Jacques, who had an exceptional week. He had a practice day for the final heat of The Big One Competition, landing 23 on a mixed bag of flies. And then won the heat with an incredible 14 fish – including the holy grail of a fish off every peg. The conditions for the competition were brutal to say the least, making this an even bigger achievement. Very well done Darren.

The anglers landed 108 fish in horrendous wind and rain producing a frankly amazing rod average of 4.5 fish on the day. Well done everyone with special thanks to the Marshalls.

Big One Heat Results

1st Darren Jaques 22pts (a/q)
2nd Simon Lee 15pts
3rd Lee Wilkinson 11pts (c/b)
4th Tristan Lincoln 11pts (c/b)
5th Chris Hall 11pts (c/b)
6th Gary Pye 10pts (c/b)
7th Chris Cowe 10pts (c/b)

Back to the pleasure fishing, and we’ve had loads of great catches once again. Plenty of brownies and bigger rainbows continue to come out with buzzers and nymphs continuing to be the dominant method, when conditions suit.

If it is calmer, you’ll most likely see fish on top, so don’t forget a dry fly rod. Top Hats, CDCs or Shipmans should have you covered. Washing lines are expected to be best so the buzzers are kept higher in the water column. Try a Foam Daddy on the point. A buzzer fished shallow under an indicator might do a similar job, or even try a dry dropper.

John Pringle had a busy week, landing close to 30 fish on Diawl Bachs, Daddies and Buzzers. Chris Macs catch of 15 was doubly impressive as he was one of only two mad/keen day ticket anglers fishing during the awful weather last Sunday. Chris caught on Daddies and Egg flies. If anything the fish seem to feed even better in a gale so might be worth a try if the forecast is right for this weekend?

Other notable catches in what has been another good week include:
Zack Scott – 14 – Dries/ Lures
Gary Pye – 12 – Olive Worm
Simon Sharpe – 11 – Nymphs
Alec Harvey – 10 – Mixed flies
Matty Devine – 10 – Lures/Nymphs
Steve McMaughan – 10 – Nymphs
Elliott Hancock – 9 – Mamba Lure
Sandy Robertson – 8 – Buzzers/Nymphs
Ryan Wilkinson – 8 – Apps/Lures
Paul Robinson – 8 – CDC/Beetle
M Shennan – 8 – Buzzers/Eggs
Julian Bales – 7 – Shipmans

Today marks the re-opening of our caravan park for the warmer months. The facebook page for the caravan park has been closed and we will use the Fishery facebook page from now on – use Messenger on this if you want to contact us with caravan park queries.

Finally, with the clocks going forward and an extra few minutes of light each week, fishery closing time has now been extended to 8.00pm. Keep an eye on these reports for ongoing changes as available daylight shifts.

Fishing Weather Forecast

Another mixed bag, but generally breezy from the SW. Lots of cloud, lots of sunshine, bits of rain. Tomorrow (Thursday) looks the pick for dry fly fishing. Check forecast at weekend as there is a chance of high winds – uncertain at moment though.

First Cast – 8.30am.
Last Cast – 8.00pm every day. Except Saturday, which is always 5.00pm.

Predicted Fly Box

Buzzers in Black or Green, Black Bunny Leech, Cormorants, Diawl Bachs, Foam Daddy on end of a washing line if fish are high in the water. Dries in the calmer corners.

See you all soon!
