Big fish, tagged fish, lots of fish.
With the change in wind direction and slightly warmer air, it is fair to say the fishing has completely lifted off. We were already fishing well, but there is an even bigger buzz about the place at the moment. It really is worth coming.
Biggest fish of the week and huge congratulations go to Paul Mallaburn, who landed a cracking 11lb 3oz Rainbow Trout from Ross Lake.
There has been an awful lot of fish caught in the 4lb to 7lb bracket. Glenn Appleby, whose catch of 22 included several of these belters – caught on worms, nymphs and lures. To cap it all … as if he hadn’t had a good enough day … Glenn also landed a tagged fish, winning him £160. Superb fishing Glenn and very well done on such a great day.
Tagged fish entry is an extra £1 on top of your ticket price. All fees are put back in the pot, which increases when no tagged fish are caught.
Reddis Lake has also been fishing very well on the bait, with plenty of fish are now showing in all areas of the lake. Bait rods are available for hire, but please check the January/February lodge opening time in the Noticeboard below before travelling.
Elsewhere this week, the big catches continue. Fish have been caught at all depths, with some anglers insisting deep was essential but others occasionally catching on dries. The top 3-4ft seem the most populated though. Black flies seem to have had the edge and the top two lakes have probably out-fished Chatton Lake.
Here’s a few more catches from a great week:
We welcomed Eyemouth Angling Club, who had a great day, landing 37 fish. Thanks for coming and we appreciate you choosing Chatton for your get together.
Zack Scott had yet another good week, landing 15 on lures and even dries.
Robbie Bell continued his regular report appearances getting 14 on Cormorants.
Kevin Rae had 13 on Zonkers, Eggs and Cormies, fished deep.
John Pringle caught 11 on Snakes and Cormies.
G Tooney had 10 on mixed flies.
Simon Sharpe went natural and had a great day with 9 on a Hares Ear Nymph.
D Aitchison landed 9 on Yellow Blobs and Black Fritz.
Allan Goodwill caught 9 on a Black Snake.
Tiddles had a great session, getting 8 on a Black Bunny Leech.
Steve McMaughn and Brian Scrowther each caught 7 on a mixture of lures.
On the 10th March we have the Chatton Cadence Codgers booked in. If anyone fancies joining this very sociable day, you’d be more than welcome. The general age leaning is ‘codgery’, but that’s not strict. Please book your place in advance so we know what grub to prepare. There are already 24 on the list.
Finally, we are less than a month away from our first heat of The Big One. A few places remain if you’d like to enter. The competition is open to anyone of any standard and the prizes are outstanding. A link is in the Noticeboard below.
Forecast
For the first time in a long time we have a very decent fishing and angler forecast. Not shirt sleeves yet, but on the improve. Some days even have sunshine and the wind is generally light, from the W/SW and it is a bit warmer. We might get started on some proper buzzer fishing at this rate. Saturday looks the most pleasant in the short term, but there’s nothing severe on the horizon anytime soon. Happy days.
First Cast – 8.30 a.m.
Last Cast – 5.00 p.m. every day.
Predicted Fly Box
Black Bunny Leech, Cormorants, Buzzers, Snakes (5cm), Zonkers, Apps, Diawl Bachs, FABs if fish are high in the water.
See you all soon!
David, Gemma and Owen
