Fishing Report w/e 14th September

Wild brownie

Fishing much better. As expected, things have picked up considerably now the weather is cooling.

Rob Frame (20), Pete Davidson (17) and Johnny Dryden (15) were the medal winners this week, catching on a mixed bag including dries, blobs, Bunny Leeches and Diawl Bachs. Superb angling lads and great to see some much bigger numbers on the board.

A lot of resident fish have reappeared from their summer breaks. These are more likely to take natural patterns compared to the newer fish, who can have their heads turned by brighter and gaudier flies fished faster.

It was pleasing to see an almost wild brownie caught by Archie Holland (see photo). These fish are almost certain to come from the fry the kids from the Tweedstart scheme stock every year and demonstrates the natural feeding available in the lakes. What a stunning fish.

Norham Angling Club were here for a club competition. 12 fished and had a great day with some excellent catches, including junior angler T Williamson, who landed 2 fish.

1st J Yeomans (12 fish)
2nd A Robinson (8 fish)
3rd D Blythe (6 fish)

In other catches:
M Hall had 9 on Dries
Beasty 7 on Lures
Robbie Bell 7 on Apps and Buzzers
Geoff Huscroft 7 on Egg Fly and Lures
Tony Robinson 7 up to 7lb on red and green buzzers.
Tom Dodds 7 up to 4lb on black lures
Eric Carmichael 7 on lures and Diawl Bachs

A relative newcomer to fly fishing, Simon Sharpe, had 6 on dries. Well done Simon.

Some great catches – what a difference the weather makes eh?!

One sour note to address is that some anglers have been using barbed hooks. This is strictly against fishery rules! It is something we try to avoid, so please don’t be offended if we ask to do a random hook check. It is for the good of the fishery and anyone found to be using them will be asked to leave. We’ll be working on the theory that anyone who refuses a hook check is using barbed and will also be asked to leave. Thank you for your understanding.

Forecast is a mixed bag for the week ahead with every wind direction possible. In general, there should be good cloud cover throughout and trout favouring temperatures every day. With rain having fallen and more showers expected, this may put a tinge of colour in the water and make the fish a little less jumpy.

Any method will have its moments, the significant change being that lures should be back in the game with fish more likely to chase in the cooler water. Dries and nymphs are still very much on the menu though.

Wednesday Night Club now finished due to the shorter nights and will be back next year.

Closing time now 8pm (except Saturday, which is always 5pm).

Predicted Fly Box

Black Bunny Leach, Snakes, Daddies, Damsels, Blobs, Diawl Bachs, Buzzers, Hares Ear, FABs.

See you all soon.

David, Gemma and Owen
